KEMAMAN: A 12-year-old pupil of SK Kijal, who emulated the fictitious detective character Sherlock Holmes, was given a commendation letter by the state police for his help in solving a murder case here recently.
Muhamad Ruzaini Mohd Zakiyah’s effort of providing a police investigation team a crucial clue earned him praises of Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Fauzi Abduri. This led to the arrest of a suspect near in Kemaman.
The suspect had bludgeoned a senior citizen to death after a heated argument last month.
Muhamad Ruzaini, the eldest of three siblings, said he was playing at a field near his home when the murder took place.
The victim’s house was close to the field, he said.
He has seen a man fleeing the scene on a bicycle in a suspicious manner.
The boy then checked out the house and found the senior citizen lying unconscious.
“I was startled by the victim and ran home to inform my mother who later lodged a police report,” he said.
The boy’s curiosity made him seek clues near the victim’s house and he found an identification card left behind by the suspect.
He handed over the card to police when they arrived at the scene.
“A day later, the police asked me to help them to establish the identity of the suspect in an identification parade and I pointed out the man,” he said.
ACP Mohd Fauzi said that police were able to solve the case with the identification card and Muhamad Ruzaini’s co-operation.
The boy said he had a passion for storybooks of detectives like Sherlock Holmes for their crime-solving skills.
“I never expected to be called the little Sherlock Holmes of Kijal, but am grateful to the police for honouring me,” he said after receiving an appreciation letter from ACP Mohd Fauzi.
