Very impressive. They also have electricity!
Zoroastrians in Iran as the oldest religious community of the nation have a long history and survive to the present-day.In 1986 there were an estimated 32,000 Zoroastrians in Iran. They speak Persian and are concentrated in Tehran, Kerman, and Yazd. Zoroastrianism initially developed in Iran during the seventh century B.C.They believe in one universal and transcendental God, Ahura Mazda, the one uncreated Creator to whom all worship is ultimately directed. Fire is considered a medium through which spiritual insight and wisdom is gained and water is considered the source of that wisdom. Both water and fire are considered life-sustaining and are represented within the precinct of a fire temple.Later, this religion became the official religion of the Sassanid Empire, which ruled over Iran for approximately four centuries before being destroyed by the Arabs in the seventh century A.D.
After Ara
b conquer over Iran the people of Iran were divided in three groups :1- Iranian Muslims
2-Jews and Christians
3- Zoroastrians
The most problematic group was the third group that is Zoroastrians. They had to choose between sword, Islam or pay head tax (Jizya) in special condition. But for those who want to save their religion, Zoroastrians were forced to live in remote area in north east of Iran. These villages are known today as Troglodyte villages.
After Iran's incorporation into the Islamic empire, the majority of its population was gradually converted from Zoroastrianism to Islam, a process that was probably completed by the tenth century.
Today, like the Christians and Jews, the Zoroastrians are recognized as an official religious minority under the Constitution of 1979. They are permitted to elect one representative to the Majlis and, like the other legally accepted minorities, may seek employment in the government. They generally enjoy the same civil liberties as Muslims. Although Zoroastrians probably have encountered individual instances of prejudice, they have not been persecuted because of their religious beliefs.
